Old Orchard Beach
Old Orchard Beach is honest about what it is: a seven-mile sand strip, an 1898 pier with bars on it, and Palace Playland, the last beachfront amusement park in New England. In July it is fried dough, French-Canadian tourists, and tribute bands; a low-stakes, high-kitsch date that photographs better than it sounds. The tradeoff is seasonality and tone. Off-season the boardwalk shutters and the town empties; in season it is loud, crowded, and aggressively unpretentious, which reads charming or grim depending on the company. Park once, walk the pier, eat a pier fry, leave before the last Downeaster back to Portland.
