Jefferson sits on the Santiam River about fifteen miles south of Salem, a Marion County town of roughly three thousand that the freeway politely skips. Mint fields, a working grain elevator, and the annual Mint Festival do most of the talking. For singles, the math is unsentimental: the local pool is small and largely spoken for, so the actual dating market is Salem or Albany, both a manageable commute. What Jefferson offers in exchange is a cheaper mortgage, a walkable old downtown, and the kind of quiet that reads as either peaceful or claustrophobic, depending on the week.
