Ceres is what happens when Modesto runs out of room and the almond orchards start losing ground to subdivisions. The city has tripled since the eighties without developing much of a downtown, which means the dating scene defaults to Highway 99 chain restaurants and whatever is happening in Modesto proper. The crowd is young, working-class, and family-formation-minded, with a Latino majority that shapes everything from the food to the weekend rhythms. Honest tradeoff: cheaper rent than Modesto, but you will drive for anything resembling a date night. Whittier Park is pleasant. The 99 is not.
