The Highlands runs Bardstown Road from Baxter up past Douglass Loop, and it is the densest bar-and-restaurant strip Louisville has. Dive bars, cocktail rooms, late-night pizza, vintage shops, and a tattoo parlor on every other block keep the sidewalk busy past midnight. The tradeoff: parking is a knife fight after eight, the sidewalks get loud on weekends, and the crowd skews student-and-twenties closer to Eastern Parkway. Walk south of Douglass for the quieter end with the better restaurants. Good for a third date that turns into a fourth bar. Cash helps. So does a willingness to wander.
