Seward

Seward has built an entire identity around one day of the year, and credit where due, the commitment is total. The Fourth of July City designation is federal, the parade is enormous, and the population briefly multiplies by something like fifteen. The other 364 days, it is a tidy county seat with a Concordia University campus, a working square, and the kind of bandshell that suggests the city council takes civic music seriously. Lincoln is twenty-five minutes east, which is close enough to commute and far enough to keep the small-town arithmetic honest. The tradeoff, as always, is that everyone knows your car.
