Crete
Crete is the company town that the company forgot to make boring. Doane University anchors the place, which means a Saline County seat of roughly 7,000 spends nine months a year impersonating a community twice its size, then deflates politely each summer. The Big Blue River loops around it; the grain elevators loom over it; the coffee shop on Main is, against all statistical odds, decent. Lincoln commuters have started noticing the housing math, which is the universal tell that a small Nebraska town is about to stop being a secret. Whether that ends well for Crete is, as ever, a question for the zoning board.
