The south side across the river is the gateway to the Urban Wilderness and forty-some miles of trail that have rewritten the neighborhood's resume. Ijams Nature Center, Mead's Quarry, the Sea Dog Trail and a coffee-or-beer corridor along Sevier Avenue have pulled in a younger creative-outdoorsy crowd without quite gentrifying out the old Vestal and Lindbergh Forest bones. Crossing the Henley or Gay Street bridge still feels like leaving downtown's bar district for somewhere quieter and more wooded. Tradeoff: housing is no longer the bargain it was five years ago, and date logistics lean toward daylight and trailheads over late nights.
