Mount Vernon is the part of Linn County that remembered to keep its downtown. Cornell College sits on the hill, the brick storefronts hold their line along First Street, and the demographic skews younger and more credentialed than the surrounding farmland would predict. For dating, this is a genuine asymmetry. There is a walkable main drag, a coffee-shop-and-wine-bar gradient that actually supports a second date, and a steady churn of faculty, staff, and upperclassmen who treat the town as more than a dorm. The catch is scale. The pool is small, the gossip radius smaller, and discretion is a local sport. Worth the drive from Cedar Rapids.
