Alabaster
Alabaster is the workhorse of south Shelby County, strung along US-31 with the unglamorous competence of a place that actually functions. The Promenade handles the big-box errands, Thompson High School handles the Friday-night identity, and the rest of town gets on with raising kids and commuting to Birmingham. There is no pretense of being Mountain Brook or Homewood, which is part of the appeal. Honest tradeoff: 31 is a traffic-light marathon and downtown is more concept than destination, but housing stays within reach and the school district keeps families putting down roots. A suburb that knows exactly what it is.
