Astoria
Astoria is where you go when you actually want to eat. Take the N or W to Broadway or 30th Avenue and walk: Taverna Kyclades for grilled octopus, Mombar for Egyptian, Sek'end Sun for the cocktail crowd, Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden when the weather cooperates. The old Greek-Italian bones now carry Bangladeshi, Brazilian, North African, and Colombian layers, often on the same block. Rents climbed but stayed under LIC's. Steinway Street after dark is a legitimate hookah-and-shisha scene. The tradeoff: the N/W is slower than the 7, and parking is a real conversation. Best for a first date that wants to feel like a city.
