River Market is Kansas City before Kansas City got self-conscious. The City Market itself still anchors the neighborhood on Saturday mornings, when the produce stalls and the Vietnamese delis pull in everyone from West Side abuelas to River Quay loft dwellers. The streetcar made the loft conversions inevitable, and rents followed. The tradeoff is real: you get walkability and the riverfront, but the post-bar quiet skews younger and the dining thins out by Tuesday. Still the most honest mixed-use date geography in town, provided you actually like markets and do not mistake the Town Topic crowd for the whole story.
