Fountain Square is the answer when Mass Ave feels too polished. Southeast of downtown, the historic theater district has kept its dive bars, duckpin lanes at Atomic Bowl, and a row of indie restaurants that punch well above the zip code, La Margarita, Bluebeard's siblings, the rotating cast on Virginia Avenue. It is the rare Indy neighborhood where a date can drift, drinks at Hi-Fi Annex, a show at the Hi-Fi proper, late tacos without a reservation. The tradeoff: gentrification is uneven, some blocks still read sketchy after midnight, and rideshare surges hit hard on show nights. Worth it for anyone tired of downtown's gloss.
