Manchester
Manchester is what happens when a mill town accepts that the mall won. Buckland Hills and the surrounding power centers do the heavy retail lifting for half of eastern Connecticut, which is either convenient or depressing depending on the errand. Main Street, the actual one, has spent a decade trying to rebrand as a walkable downtown: Silver Lane Pizza, a few breweries, the restored Cheney mill buildings doing loft duty. It mostly works on a Friday night. Housing stays cheaper than West Hartford, the Road Race on Thanksgiving morning is a real civic event, and nobody pretends Tolland Turnpike is charming.
