Vanilla
Vanilla describes conventional sexual preferences or activity, without BDSM, kink, or fetish elements.
The term originated as slang within 1970s gay and kink communities, labeling conventional, non-kink sexual practice and, by extension, people who do not engage in kink. It draws on vanilla's status as the plain, default ice cream flavor against which more elaborate flavors are compared, a comparison that has remained in wide use since. On dating apps and in dating profiles, "vanilla" functions as a self-descriptor or compatibility marker, used alongside terms like "kinky," "kink-friendly," or "sex-positive." A profile might read "vanilla but curious" to signal openness to exploring kink, or simply "vanilla" to indicate a preference for conventional intimacy without BDSM, fetish, or role-play. The word also appears on kink-specific platforms such as FetLife, where it distinguishes non-kink members or activities from the community's core focus. In mixed relationships, a "vanilla partner" refers to the non-kink person paired with someone who identifies as kinky. The term is generally used neutrally rather than as a criticism: it describes a preference for stability and simplicity rather than a deficiency, though usage can vary by speaker and context. Outside sexual contexts, "vanilla" can describe plain or conventional taste more broadly, but within dating-app usage it refers specifically to sexual and relational conventionality relative to kink.
