Shrekking

/ˈʃɹɛk.ɪŋ/

Deliberately dating someone you consider below your own looks or status, on the theory they'll be more loyal or grateful. Named, unkindly, after Shrek.

Etymology & origin

Humorously named after the famous green ogre Shrek who lived a simple life in a swamp.

✦ Relationship psychology

Driven by personal insecurity and a desire to control the relationship dynamic. Unfortunately, loyalty is determined by character, not by facial symmetry, and this strategy often backfires.

Live texting example
He's not really my type physically, but I feel like he'll treat me like a queen and never leave me because he knows he got lucky.
Boundary guide: how to respond
  1. 1Acknowledge that character and looks are entirely independent.
  2. 2Date people because you genuinely respect and are attracted to them, not to feel superior.
