SFW stands for "Safe For Work," meaning content, photos, or messages appropriate for public or professional viewing, not sexually explicit.
SFW is general internet shorthand that predates dating apps, originating in early internet forum, image-board, and blogging culture as a quick way to flag whether content could be opened on a shared or professional screen without concern. It is the direct counterpart to NSFW ("Not Safe For Work"), which marks content as sexually explicit, graphic, or otherwise inappropriate for open settings. In dating-app and dating-culture usage, SFW typically appears in three related ways. First, as a descriptor for profile photos or bio content, assuring a viewer that pictures are non-explicit. Second, as a label attached to a shared link, image, or meme inside a chat, signaling that it is fine to open in front of others. Third, as a stated conversational boundary, where one or both people indicate they want to keep an exchange non-sexual. The term is descriptive rather than evaluative: it communicates content type, not attractiveness or interest level. Within dating apps, texting, and social media generally, SFW carries the same core sense it has elsewhere online. Its closest related term is its direct opposite, NSFW, and the two are almost always understood as a pair.
