How often people in the lifestyle actually use the physical-object versions is disputed. Multiple journalists who interviewed self-identified swingers, and at least one sociologist who studies the community, report that many participants have never used the pineapple as a real-world signal and describe it as more of an outsider-driven internet legend than a reliable operating code. The emoji's use on dedicated lifestyle apps is better documented than the physical displays. No single verified origin story accounts for the symbol; various explanations circulate informally, but none has been independently confirmed as the definitive source. Orientation is central to the symbol's claimed meaning.
