Ghostlighting

/ˈɡoʊst.laɪ.tɪŋ/

Ghosting someone, then denying the disappearance or reframing it as their overreaction when they call it out. A blend of ghosting and gaslighting.

Etymology & origin

A modern hybrid slang coined around 2023 to capture the double-whammy of being ignored and then emotionally manipulated about it.

✦ Relationship psychology

This behavior allows the perpetrator to avoid accountability for their inconsistency. By blaming the victim's perception of time or responsiveness, they maintain control and keep the victim off-balance.

Live texting example
[After not replying for a week] Hey! Want to hang out tonight?
Hey, you completely disappeared for a week. I was wondering what happened.
What are you talking about? Disappeared? I literally texted you like two days ago, you're always exaggerating things.
Boundary guide: how to respond
  1. 1Keep receipts: Check the timestamps of your messages so you have ground-truth evidence.
  2. 2State facts firmly: 'We actually haven't spoken since last Tuesday. I value consistent contact, so please don't minimize my concern.'
  3. 3Evaluate the relationship: If inconsistency and denial are persistent patterns, it's best to walk away.
