DDF stands for "Drug and Disease Free," a self-disclosure used in dating profiles to indicate no drug use and no known STIs.
The exact origin of DDF is unclear, but the acronym predates modern dating apps: it appears to have circulated in online personal ads and early internet dating classifieds from the late 1990s or early 2000s onward, and carried over into contemporary hookup and dating platforms, where it remains common shorthand today, including on Grindr, which has published its own glossary entry defining the term. DDF functions as a self-disclosure rather than a verified status: the poster states, either unprompted or in response to a question, that they do not use recreational drugs and are not aware of carrying a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is frequently paired with a reciprocal request, such as "DDF only" or "must be DDF," asking that a prospective partner meet the same standard. Because the claim rests entirely on the individual's own reporting, with no medical verification attached, it functions as an honor-system disclosure rather than a guarantee, and it is commonly treated as a starting point for a testing-and-status conversation rather than a substitute for one. A related but increasingly discouraged variant is "clean," which conveys the same intended meaning but has drawn criticism for implying that an STI-positive status makes a person "dirty." DDF appears across both same-sex and opposite-sex dating and hookup contexts and is frequently listed alongside other profile shorthand such as "420-friendly" or "NSA" (no strings attached).
