Five Points is where Columbia drops the pretense. The fountain anchors a wedge of bars, late-night pizza, and patios that USC has claimed as its unofficial student union since roughly forever, and Thursday through Saturday it runs on cheap pitchers and louder decisions. The upside is honesty: nobody is pretending this is a wine bar district, and the dive-bar density makes a first date cheap, walkable, and impossible to overplan. The tradeoff is the obvious one. If you are past the Group Therapy years, come for an early dinner on Devine and let the undergrads have midnight.
