Eleanor is what happens when the federal government decides a town from scratch is the cure for the Depression. Roosevelt's Resettlement Administration laid out the grid in 1934, and the bones still show: modest houses on uniform lots, civic spaces where the planners said civic spaces should go. Putnam County wraps around it now, and Charleston commuters keep the lights on. The dating math is small-town honest.
