Spenard
Spenard is the neighborhood Anchorage uses to prove it has personality. Wedged between Ted Stevens, Lake Hood seaplane base, and a string of dive bars old enough to vote, it has always been the part of town where the city's eccentrics could afford rent. That is changing. Chilkoot Charlie's still anchors the corner, but the surrounding blocks now host third-wave coffee, queer-friendly venues, and the kind of restaurants that put fireweed on the menu unironically. Dating here means cocktails at a converted garage and a walk along the lake. Spenardigans, as residents proudly call themselves, are still the warmest people in town.
